2013 is the International Year of Statistics (IYS2013). It is devoted to promote “the importance of statistics to the scientific community, business and government data users, the media, policymakers, employers, secondary school and college students, and millions of people like you”.
The Catalan Society of Statistics (SCE) and the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat) have joined this initiative of the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, International Biometric Society, International Statistical Institute (and the Bernoulli Society), and Royal Statistical Society from the very beginning. As established by the founding organizations, the campaign’s primary goals are to increase public awareness of the power and impact of statistics on all aspects of society, to nurture statistics as a profession, especially among young people, and to promote creativity and development in the sciences of probability and statistics. Statistics2013 is supported by more than 1,500 organizations, including research institutes, national and international professional statistical societies, government statistical agencies, colleges and universities of all over of the world. You can explore the Statistics2013 site at http://www.statistics2013.org.
Among other initiatives, SCE and Idescat are driving this blog in order to promote a statistical approach to ordinary life. What’s life like from a statistical point of view? There are statistics when being born, while going to the supermarket, as taking medicines or while driving a car… and this blog will show you so. Which role do statistics play in our daily life? Do we need statistical calculations to take informed decisions?
A group of statisticians will write on these and other affairs. We invite you to do the same and to post your comments, thoughts or even your hesitations if you fancy, while taking a walk through some daily topics explained by statisticians.
Enter the blog and taste the world in the way a statistician would!
